I don’t always place pretty pictures, nor are my words always easy to read. This is how we grow. These moments are the times we uncover the lies that we have accepted as truths, and face fears we deny.
For those who do not know of the reason for the canary in the mine, they were used to tell miners that death was near, that death was eminent. These beautiful creatures died to tell of coming events within the confines of the mine.
There are many canaries in our mine these days and our mines have expanded into towns, cities, countries and continents. Our mines too, are our soul, us. These canaries are seen everyday within our societies, within us. They are the riots, the wars, the terrorists, the patriots, the police, the vaccines, the obesity, the politicians and everything that shouts, we are sick.
Wars have continued and have escalated to an ongoing event somewhere in our world. Police beat and kill those who do not and even those who do comply. Governments take, muggers mug, robbers rob and killers kill every moment of everyday. These events are our canaries, but sadly we wait until death knocks on our door now. We no longer heed the song of dying canaries.
At this point, we want to say we pay attention and that we support this or that, but still we ignore the canary’s song. This tiny yellow spirit whispers a melody that our soul should heed. From this song we should act, not in solving the mines problems, but by healing ourselves. When miners observed the dying note of the canary, they took care of themselves. They heeded the warning by donning their masks and leaving the mine, which saved them. It is time to save our self. Save us, the soul.
You save you and I save me, first by acknowledging the death of our goodness, our innocence and our love. We can tell our sickness by those we put down, by those we walk by, by our not noticing the endless warring, the death of the unborn, by adding bandage upon bandage without nary a blink.
We save ourselves by putting on our mask first and then by helping others. We now must work on our soul, not the world’s. In the care and nurturing of ourselves, we can care and nurture the world, but first we must heed the warnings within our lives and act to save ourselves. If our life is filled with endless sorrow, disappointment and heartache from others harming us over and over, we must listen to our canary and accept its song of change. Should we deny or pretend, ignore and discount, we will suffer the slow repetitive death of our soul in an endless downward spiral.
If our life’s sad story repeats itself, that story is our canary and it will forever sing a song that only we can heed, but we must heed. Do we want to tell our sad story forever - you know, that same old tale that garners sympathy, but it does not heal our heart, nor allow us, the soul to soar? This is when we must each answer this question for ourselves.
Listen to the canaries in your life, those who sing to you, who encourage you to heal and fly again. Look around - We are your canaries. We are your soul. Listen to our song and come soar with us.
